Shu Hirayama is an accomplished film director and cinematographer from Japan, with a diverse and successful career spanning
TV shows, narrative films, documentaries, and commercials.
He began his professional journey at a subsidiary of MBS (Mainichi Broadcasting System), where he spent nine years refining his skills in production and direction, collaborating with prominent Japanese networks such as NHK, TBS, MBS, ABC, BS-TBS, and BS-Fuji.
Hirayama's formal training includes a Filmmaking/TV Production program at the Japan Institute of Photography and Film (2006–2008), followed by a Directing program at the New York Film Academy (2016–2017).
In recent years, he has expanded his expertise as a cinematographer, contributing his creative vision to not only numerous movie productions but also top global brands such as COACH, TIFFANY, Miu Miu, and UNIQLO, as well as renowned artists including Bruce Springsteen,
Steven Van Zandt, Tomokazu Matsuyama, and Chiharu Shiota. With a unique blend of technical expertise and creative sensibility,
his work spans both the United States and Japan, further cementing his reputation as a versatile filmmaker.
As both a director and director of photography, Hirayama’s approach to filmmaking is rooted in meticulous pre-production planning,
fostering a calm and focused environment on set, and maintaining a streamlined post-production workflow.
